CanDo Solutions From The CanDo People Gateway has designed a range of solutions to augment the product benefits of its linecard. Its goal is to help customers drive efficiencies into the way they procure products and then turn those efficiencies into advantages for their businesses. Gateway doesn’t only maintain stock for the brands it represents, but since inception, it has been working with global OEM and CEM accounts to design and implement a range of logistic solutions for its customers. It thus augments the product benefits of its linecard and helps customers drive efficiencies into the way they procure products. Customers have in the past reduced their total cost of acquisition, waste and downtime. With Gateway’s help, some have decreased their design-to-market time whilst upholding quality standards. Thanks to Gateway’s value-added solutions, customers realise their true production potential. Supply Chain Solutions More than two-thirds of the cost of component acquisition is attributable to non-components’ costs such as purchasing, planning and expediting; transportation and packaging; goods inwards inspection and receipt processing; warehousing and stock management; shortage resolutions and obsolescence management; residual and excess stock write-off; pre-production planning, kitting, component management, assembling and programming; and invoice processing and reconciliation. Gateway has a wealth of experience and management expertise in constructing supply solutions that focus on reducing the costs of acquisition. In parallel, we aim to keep a constant downward pressure on component prices through our product solutions programmes. Our analytic process allows customers to determine which items from the bills of material they want to include in the programme. They also tell us what support features would help them minimize work and costs. On our end, based on dynamic modelling, we assess demand patterns at line level to determine appropriate buffer stock levels, taking into account lead-time and demand vagaries. Then we structure a bespoke supply solution to minimise the amount of inventory needed within your business. Finally, we agree with you a replenishment pattern that ensures you have no production down-time. In addition, you can call product off using one of our electronic trading solutions (or even ask us to construct an e-solution matched to your specific needs), and have it delivered ‘direct-to-line’ on a ‘just-in-time’ arrangement. In line with our ESG guidelines, we use replenishable ‘green’ containers that we both deliver and collect so as to minimise the product handling within your premises. Find Out More Product Solutions On every major bill-of-material that we receive we take the time to analyse the list of specified parts to identify key packaging opportunities; risky single-source items; items in obsolescence; and potential areas for cost saving by recommending alternative sources. All of our key customer-facing personnel have in excess of 15 years industry experience. With the combined expertise of its senior staff and over a 100 years of combined industry service, Gateway is one of few companies that can boast such a wealth of knowledge. Gateway people know when something is possible and they always run the extra mile to make it happen. That’s why when a customer calls, they expect us to say “Yes, we can do that”, because invariably – we can! And if on the odd occasion the solution does not exist, our technical and engineering teams will work with the customer to design one. Gateway works closely with the technical support teams of the franchises that it represents and would be happy to organise demonstration days and seminars with customers’ engineering staff. CatM CAT-M1 also known as LTE-M is designed for Low power applications requiring medium data throughput. It has a tighter bandwidth of 1.4Mhz (compared to the 20 MHz of regular LTE), this provides longer range but less throughput. It utilises the same cell handover features of regular LTE allowing for mobility support. LTE LTE cellular technology or more commonly known as 4G was an advancement on 2G (GSM) and 3G (UMTS). LTE stands for Long-Term-Evolution and its goal was to increase speed and capacity of cellular networks, it achieved this by utilising DSP (digital signal processing) techniques and modulations. LTE technology operates on a wide variety of frequency bands that differ depending on the country ranging from 450 MHZ to 3700 MHZ. WiFi Wi-Fi is something we are all more than familiar with in our day to day lives. It is commonly used to provide local area networking of devices and internet access, allowing for nearby devices to exchange data via radio waves. Most commonly used for computer networks Wi-Fi is ever present in the modern day home, office space and public areas. LoRa 2G A Complete Modular Platform For IoT Connectivity CloudG8 is an online cloud platform that allows users to display, interact and respond to real world datapoints from anywhere in the world. The system is centred around dashboards and providing easy to read visuals, that help keep the user informed across single devices or a fleet of 1000’s of devices. The intelligent rules engine and reporting features remove the need for mundane tasks and provides a mechanism for preventative maintenance and responsive control to key data points. The system is scalable from a single device up to 100,000’s of devices and is fully mobile compliant. We offer a range of hardware to support the translation from real world data to cloud intelligence, supporting standard off the shelf products to completely bespoke builds incorporating WiFi and Cellular technologies. Explore CloudG8 Device Dashboard Dashboards feature throughout CloudG8 and can be created against individual devices or against a fleet of devices. The fleet dashboards can be created across multiple tabs to provide the user with key data points at the click of a button. The dashboards are designed to provide a visual representation of the live data stream, we utilise a widget-based system that allows users to quickly add new visuals for data points which interact with the data that is being received. The dashboard provides two-way communication and allows users to manually intervene and trigger downlinks through the dashboard system. All dashboards are mobile compliant! Widgets include: Boolean – Display a Boolean value with conditional formatting based on the state Charts – Show data as a line chart, supports multi data points Headings – Display a Heading to help keep the layout clean Histogram – Show data as a histogram Map – Shows location data on a map-based widget – See location Tracking Text – Display hard coded text values to keep the layout clean Value – Display the latest received value, also supports Gauges to provide visual feedback Switch – Create a switch to trigger downlinks as a toggle switch Slider – Create a slider to write to fields Downlinks – Create a button to trigger downlinks as a momentary switch Image – Displays static images Image Map – Displays interactive diagrams to help with floor plans iFrame – Display an iframe within the dashboard The dashboard can overlay location data on a map. This provides real time data and can also show historical data to provide a timeline of location points. The map provides a scrollable date feature which allow you to cycle through each day to see the location points that have been received for that day. On fleet management dashboard, the map also allows you to select an individual device based on it’s location and show the device dashboard within the map widget. Location Tracking Reporting To support the live data visuals within the dashboard we also provide a reports module. This allows users to generate periodic reports of the data from your devices. The extensive reporting module allows you to produce reports per device or across a fleet of devices, using groups, day or name, these reports can be combined into one file or reported on separate files. Reports are then automatically generated within a set timeframe (hourly, daily, weekly) to allow the user to download them, alternatively they can be automatically emailed. Downlinks Downlinks form a key part of the Bi-directional communication and allows the users to interact with hardware via the dashboard platform. Downlinks can be triggered manually via a button in the dashboard system or automatically using the Intelligent rules engine. Downlinks can be integrated to override scheduled data publishes to the dashboard and gain live data, provide an instruction back to the device and trigger key functionality remotely. When combined with the intelligent rules engine the downlink functionality can create an automated response to quickly act on key data points. Intelligent Rules Engine The intelligent rules engine provides users with an intelligent assistant to react to key datapoints at device or fleet level. Users can create rule sets that define how to handle fault or high-risk scenarios, these will automatically trigger based on the values of key datapoints. Send notifications and alerts via SMS or email Call external services via a webhook Call a downlink to trigger a hardware response A SIM Service Tailor Made Just For You! SIM-G8 is a scalable SIM solution which allows for easy fleet management, monitoring as well as complete flexibility in its data bundles. Our stock profile is built to ensure we cover all customer applications including power, signal and EMI for both low and high frequency applications. Stocking material from Ferroxcube, TDK (EPCOS), Fair-Rite and Mag Inc ensures quality is never an issue for our customers. Gateway also stocks an exclusive range of blocks from TDK (EPCOS), Ferroxcube, Fair-Rite and Mag Inc. The range of stock comprises of the latest materials from the leading ferrite manufacturers. The Machine Shop has close links factories, allowing us to work with the technical departments to create new materials that are designed specifically for our customers application, these can then be pressed into blocks and machined. Tooling Gateway works exclusively with UK tooling manufacturers to produce the specialist tooling required for machining ferrite. All machine tools are produced to Gateways exact specification, a specification built on years of knowledge, experience and most of all Research & Development. This allows The Machine Shop to offer a dynamic and flexible response to our customers requirements and provides a solid foundation to meet the most demanding of designs allowing us to machine the most challenging geometries whilst maintaining lead times as short as one week for custom geometry cores. Workholding Gateway uses the latest technology to continuously refine its work holding techniques. In turn this allows us to push our machining capabilities and meet the most demanding of requirements. The nature of ferrite dictates that standard mechanical work holdings cannot be used. The Machine Shop uses magnetic workholdings as the foundation of all jobs. These magnetic work holdings are customized and supplemented through additive and subtractive machining techniques to ensure we keep costs and delivery times down to an absolute minimum for our customers. Tools & Workholdings Ferrite Block Materials Centre limb gaps - AL, inductance and physical gaps Adding a centre limb gap allows us to tune the core’s inductance value to the customer’s requirement. The larger the gap the smaller the inductance value of the core. Gaps are applied to the centre limb to control leakage and offers a vast improvement on mechanical gapping (adding material between all 3 limbs). The higher inductance values can be influenced by very small imperfections or changes in dimensional gap; therefore, it is crucial to have high precision machinery to allow us to hit tight tolerances down to +/-1% on inductance and +/-0.005mm on dimensional gaps. Gapping a core can also influence the Bsat figure by pushing this higher. Profile and contour machining - chamfers and fillets Chamfers and fillets reduce the number of sharp edges on a core – they are often found on square parts that may need to fit inside of a round bobbin. These processes are also useful for reducing the degradation of the insulator around the wire that may be wound straight onto the core, as they reduce the chance of the wire being damaged, or even broken, upon installation. Hole cutting - small drill holes, large bores With the use of our 3-axis machines and specialist tooling, we are able to drill holes into ferrite blocks. These holes can be bored out to the desired size, allowing tighter tolerances to be achieved. Holes can be useful for EMC applications where the distance between the ferrite and the conductor can have a direct impact on the attenuation levels available. Holes are also used for mounting and can be used to insert temperature sensors into the centre of the core to allow the user to record the core temperature. Full 3/5-axis CNC machining CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining allows us to generate a program which our machines can follow to create the desired part. 3-axis machines operate on the x-y-z planes which allow unique designs to be produced, however 5-axis machines have the additional benefit of an a-b axis – this allows for more intricate parts to be created from a single program. The added a-b axis allows for the stock to be moved, as well as the tooling. We have refined our machining techniques to ensure we produce the highest quality parts. Custom core geometries from blocks Custom core geometries can be machined from blocks with help from our 3-axis machines and close partnerships with suppliers of raw material – we work with some of the biggest names in ferrite, including TDK, Ferroxcube, Fair-Rite and Magnetics Inc. Stocking a wide range of block sizes allows us to choose the most appropriate material to machine each custom geometry. Our motto is “If you can dream it, we can machine it” and we always aim to exceed customer expectations. This is a cost-effective alternative to paying for a mould tool and pressing/sintering the custom geometries which can cost £1000’s per tool, we also offer rapid turnaround. Toroid splitting A toroid can be split into two pieces, which allows the part to be used in places which already have high-voltage wires installed and can’t be removed easily. Splitting the toroid enables each half to be placed on either side of the wire to be joined together. Our custom-made jigs mean the parts can be held in place whilst machining in order to reduce any chipping or fracturing. Custom cutting discs also enable the toroids to be cut using our 3-axis milling machines. Toroid air gaps We can add small air gaps into toroids using our dedicated tooling, gaps as small as 0.8mm up to large gaps, this is useful for changing the inductance value of the toroid and is popular in sensor applications. Rod machining - cutting, length reduction We can machine rods to the length required by a customer – to do this, we use a specific cutting wheel which cuts through the excess rod and leaves a tidy finish on the machined rod. With the aid of custom jigs, we are able to machine rods to any length required. This enables the final part to fit a variety of applications – small or large, achieving the desired effect. Slot cutting Cutting slots in parts are useful for allowing an access point for a cable to enter the centre of the part. They are most useful for pot cores that don’t have an opening in the outer limbs for cables to exit. Our custom tooling is used when machining which allows for a precise slot to be achieved. Ferrite gluing Ferrite gluing is a useful method of achieving parts that can’t be made from just one block of material. This increases the scale of parts that can be created and enables customers to create truly bespoke pieces. We also use two different types of glue, with one being able to withstand higher temperatures, which again increases the types of projects that we are able to undertake. Lapping and mirror finish Lapping is a process that allows us to create a perfectly flat face. This is done through removing material from the surface of the ferrite to reduce the residual air gap. This technique allows us to increase the Inductance value of the core, we can further increase this by creating a mirror finish on the mating faces. Our Capabilities If You Can Dream It, We Can Machine It! The Ferrite Gateway Machine Shop offers customers a complementary service to provide custom gapped and machined ferrite cores from our specialist UK facility. Gateway already stocks a vast range of ‘standard’ gapped cores as well as a comprehensive portfolio of ungapped ferrite cores. The machine shop facility now gives customers across Europe and USA the opportunity to have cores gapped to bespoke inductance, AL or dimensional specification without the hassle of high minimum order quantities or extended factory lead times. The Machine Shop specialises in machining custom geometry ferrites utilising our exclusive channel for ferrite blocks from some of the biggest names in ferrite. Get In Touch Services We Provide CAD Every job that passes through The Machine Shop will have a dedicated CAD drawing, drafted by one of our team of trained engineers, to meet the specification requirements of the customer. After customer approval of the drawing, and any agreement on First Article Inspection samples, the job will be committed to The Machine Shop’s schedule. Planning The Machine Shop schedule planning is maintained with the Production Works Order system embedded in our operating system. After drawing approval is received, and the works order is raised, the customer will receive an indication of job completion dates based on machine loading. The Gateway operating system has live updates for Sales staff so that they can monitor the progress of Machine Shop jobs, and report any changes to schedules where appropriate. In some cases, capacity adjustments may be possible to expedite urgent customer requirements. Measurement Substantial investment has been made in a wireless probing system that allows measurements to be taken in three dimensions with up to 0.001mm repeatability. The probing system is driven by our CNC system and provides customers with absolute measurements that they can rely on. We are able to machine to the following tolerances: AL and inductance values down to +/-1% Dimensional values down to +/-0.005mm General Machining to +/- 0.05mm Testing The Machine Shop has developed exacting standards and test procedures to ensure everything that is shipped meets the specification outlined in the drawing. We stock a large range of standard test coils which are all wound to ensure the full winding area is filled with 100 turns of wire; ensuring the winding is evenly distributed over the gap which increases test accuracy. As well as standard test coils, The Machine Shop can use customers test coils and test to their exact specification. The Machine Shops standard test procedure is to sample batch test the finished cores to ensure the specification is met. The test results are electronically stored against the works order job and can be recalled at any stage. The Machine Shop can offer 100% testing and can also offer a First Article Inspections service, based on our own standard template or adjusted to match the customers test requirements. Ultrasonic Cleaning and Packaging During the machining process coolant is used to control temperature effects, reduce tool wear and control airborne particulates. After machining, the ferrite is often left with a deposit of ferrite sediment that needs to be removed. The ultrasonic cleaning bath is used to remove the ferrite sediment using environmentally friendly cleaning agents, and then the cores are air treated at room temperature prior to packaging. All ferrite cores are securely packaged in polystyrene shipping containers and/or secure vacuum packaging to avoid damage when in transit. Standard or customer bespoke labelling will then be affixed to the packaging and relevant test documentation will accompany each batch of material supplied. Custom Packaging Although often forgotten about, packaging is an important element of the process as this is what keeps your newly machined parts safe in transit. Parts are typically packed back into their original packaging, but this sometimes isn't possible with bespoke geometries. This is where custom packaging comes in! Our team are able to design packaging around your parts which are then precision cut using our laser cutter, creating a snug fit to help prevent breakages. Single Sided Double Sided Multilayer Flexible Flex Rigid HDI Boards IMS + Copper CAD Aluminium Boards LED Long Boards Stencil Single Sided Single-sided PCBs continue to be in demand among our customers. We manufacture these boards for various applications, including industrial and lighting industries. In the consumer sector, affordable single-sided PCBs are as essential as double-sided ones. We offer single-sided PCBs in all variations, from prototypes to large-scale production. Double Sided Double-sided PCBs remain in high demand among our customers. We manufacture these boards for various applications, including industrial controls and the lighting industry. In the consumer sector, affordable double-sided PCBs are essential. We offer double-sided PCBs in all variations, from prototypes to large-scale production. Multilayer A multilayer PCB consists of at least three copper layers, typically an even number starting at four layers. The inner layers are processed in pairs and bonded with prepregs, which serve as insulation. The outermost layers are copper and used for placing components on one or both sides. Connections between the layers are established by drilling through all the layers, but they can also be made using buried or blind vias, depending on the layout's complexity. Multilayer PCBs are used in computers, phones, medical equipment, automotive systems, and aerospace devices. Flexible Flexible circuits are ideal for situations where space is limited. Another advantage of flexible PCBs is their safety. They often eliminate the need for connectors and cables, as these components are integrated into the circuit itself. Flex Rigid Traditional Flex-Rigid Structure: This is a multi-layer combination of rigid and flexible circuits with three or more layers and plated-through holes. Asymmetrical Flex-Rigid Structure: In this configuration, the flexible printed circuit (FPC) is on the outer layer of the rigid structure. It consists of three or more layers with plated-through holes. Multi-Layer Flex-Rigid Build-Up: This includes blind and buried vias as part of the rigid build-up, allowing for the realization of up to two layers of micro vias. HDI Boards HDI circuit boards provide finer line structures and smaller vias. Microvias save space and offer better electrical properties compared to traditional thick vias or blind holes. By adding extra layers using the Sequential Build-Up (SBU) technique, signals can be routed and separated on the inner layers without occupying space needed for components with high pin density. With careful planning and an efficient layout, these components can even be placed on opposite sides of the PCB. IMS + Copper CAD The abbreviation IMS stands for "Insulated Metal Substrate." This type of PCB is constructed on a metal plate, typically aluminum, but it can also be copper-clad. A special prepreg is applied, providing excellent heat dissipation and strong dielectric strength for high-voltage applications. Aluminium Boards Aluminum PCBs are part of the IMS (Insulated Metal Substrates) family. These PCBs are constructed on an aluminum plate with a special prepreg applied, offering excellent heat dissipation and strong dielectric strength. The base material includes an aluminum core, a thermally laminated dielectric layer, and a copper foil that forms the PCB design. Among metal core PCBs, aluminium PCBs are the most commonly used type. LED LED PCBs are specifically designed to meet the requirements of various LED types and their density on the board. For producing LED PCBs, a thin layer of thermally conductive material (dielectric) is often used to dissipate heat more quickly than conventional PCB materials. This helps extend the service life of the LEDs. Aluminum is primarily used for LED circuit boards. Long Boards We manufacture exceptionally long printed circuit boards (PCBs) measuring up to 1185 mm (1.185 meters) in length, ranging from single-layer to eight-layer configurations. These long PCBs are primarily utilised across various industries, including lighting, automotive, aerospace, and health and safety. When comparing long PCBs to multiple shorter ones, the primary benefit becomes evident: shorter PCBs require connectors to link them together. These connectors can introduce potential electrical contact errors, which can compromise performance and reliability. In contrast, long PCBs eliminate the need for these connectors, thereby reducing the risk of such errors. Additionally, the assembly of long PCBs is often more cost-effective. The absence of connectors and the streamlined installation process contribute to overall cost savings. By opting for longer PCBs, you not only enhance the reliability of your systems but also simplify the assembly process and reduce installation complexity. Stencil For simple, uncomplicated PCBs, especially for samples or low-quantity runs, we recommend using a stencil without a frame. These stencils are easy to handle and provide a cost-effective solution for basic needs. For more complex boards with a high density of components, we advise using stencils with a frame. These framed stencils offer greater stability and precision, making them ideal for intricate designs and ensuring optimal solder paste application. Need a Bespoke PCB?
